26 Spas offering pensioner discounts around South Africa

I love going to a spa whether it is on my own or with my daughter or a best friend. A spa for me represents a place of tranquility, relaxation and off course pampering! I had great fun scanning the country to find you no less than 26 spas offering various discounts to pensioners to make a special day out more affordable.

Brief history of spas

Originally spas were associated with water treatments and hot springs. The history of using water not for hygienic reasons, but for healing purposes date back thousands of years and may even have been around before the Greek or Roman baths.

As for the word “spa” there are different theories, one being that it refers to the Belgium town Spa where injured Roman soldiers are said to have treated their aching muscles from battle in the hot springs. Another theory is that it is an acronym for the Latin phrase “Salus per Qquam” meaning health from water.

Interestingly the modern-day spa only really started developing a following amongst wealthy women in the 1980s. Prior to that the first ever day spa is accredited to Elizabeth Arden who opened her Red Door Salon in 1910. Spas and wellness centres have since exploded across the globe. It is no longer a luxury preserved for the ladies of high society, but is now marketed as a health and wellness necessity catering for all.

Benefits of spa treatments

From the top of my head, I would list the following benefits of going to a spa on a regular basis:

  • Spas are, in my experience, designed to give you a break from your everyday routine and to whisk you away to calm and relaxing atmosphere;

  • It provides an opportunity to unwind by yourself or with loved ones with phones locked away for the duration of your treatment(s);

  • You emerge from a spa feeling pampered.

There are also physical and mental health benefits to unlock from visiting a spa or wellness centre, dependent off course on the type of treatment you book:

  • Improved circulation;

  • Eases joint and muscle pain;

  • Reduces stress and anxiety;

  • Improves sleep quality;

  • Boosts skin health.
