Golf for me is a bit like fruit cake, you either love it or hate it. In my family, golf is enjoyed by my husband and my young daughter. My sister, and co-founder of this website, also enjoys a good round.

The origins of golf can be traced back to Scotland in the 15th century. One of my favourite writers PG Wodehouse describes it in his humorous way “Golf, like measles, should be caught young”. Having said that it is one of the sports that has no age restriction and can be enjoyed for as long as your swing allows.

Benefits of playing golf

Golf has many benefits and even for me as an observer and avid golf cart driver, the pleasure of a day out on the fairway comes from the beautiful settings that come standard with most golf courses. I have enjoyed game watching from the golf cart in Skukuza, Hans Merensky outside Phalaborwa and even at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Not only does golf get you out and about in nature, but if you do not rent a golf cart walking the course is great exercise. Gary Player who famously said “the more I practice, the luckier I get” is a firm believer in regular exercise and his golf course at Sun City does not even allow golf carts for that reason.

Golf can also list socialising as one of its benefits. Not only at the 19th hole, but generally interacting during a four ball, club competitions or weekend golf tournaments make for a great outing.

Lastly, the game itself is fun and one of the few games where you play with others, but actually against yourself.
